Fall In Love with STEM!
In February, the Physical Sciences Department hosted a collaborative public outreach event for middle school students in the STEM disciplines. This effort was led by faculty and students from GRCC and Van Andel Institute. The event was part of a series of similar events sponsored by the Association of Women in Science West Michigan chapter.

Geography student awarded scholarship for leadership and service
April Shirey, president of the GRCC Chapter of the International Geographical Honor Society, was recently awarded the Hruby Scholarship, which guarantees she will pay no more than 50 percent of the tuition for completion of the B.A. in Geography at Aquinas College. April is the third nontraditional GRCC Geography student in recent years to receive the Hruby Scholarship, which is awarded in recognition of exemplary leadership and service in our community. She also received the Dr. Phillip Sigal Peace and Justice Memorial Scholarship, which was awarded by the GRCC English Department, for completion of the Associate Degree. In addition to demonstrating leadership and service through the honor society, April presents papers at academic conferences, provides academic tutoring to students in a number of disciplines, and works as a production coordinator for events taking place throughout the U.S. She intends to begin studies at Aquinas in August 2017.

Student Grace VanHoven receives 3rd place in Opera Grand Rapids competition
GRCC student Grace VanHoven received Division I third place in Opera Grand Rapids’ Collegiate Vocal Competition!
The competition is open to student vocalists who are being trained full time at West Michigan colleges and universities. Libor Ondras, GRCC’s director of orchestras and string specialist, was a judge.
Biology Faculty Members host Statewide Conference
Tournees Film Festival 2016
This international festival, which featured a total of six films, was the result of a partnership between the French programs at GRCC and GVSU and a generous grant. Three films were shown at GVSU Loosemore Auditorium, with an additional three films shown at GRCC ATC Auditorium. Admission for all films was free. Professor Hillery Haney also hosted Alain Gagnol, director of one of the films, who made a presentation to her FR-231 class. The class thoroughly enjoyed conversation and Q&A with the esteemed director!
