New student orientation is mandatory and consists of an online and in-person portion.
Students with a GPA of 2.99 or under should complete the online portion of orientation, then must attend an in-person orientation session.
Students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher need to complete only the online portion of orientation, but they are welcome to attend an in-person session as well if they choose.
1. Orientation Registration
Please RSVP. More information can be found on our Registration Info page.
Please note that only degree-seeking students who have completed the admissions process will be mailed a welcome letter, and an orientation invitation.
Time: Plan to attend the entire length of the orientation session. The session is scheduled for four hours, but may end early depending on your needs.
Parents and Guests: While family support is an important part of a student’s academic career, this orientation program is designed and intended for incoming students, and space is limited. So if you choose to attend, please understand you may be separated from your student for part of the program.
2. Setup Blackboard Account
You can setup your Blackboard account at grcc.edu/password. Blackboard is an online tool that provides a wealth of academic online resources. This username and password will be used to access Blackboard, as well as other GRCC systems such as Student Email, and Campus computers. Technology questions or problems? Call (616) 234-4357.
3. Set up your Online Center Account:
If you have difficulty or questions about this step, we will assist you with it at orientation.
4. Complete Online Orientation Session
Sign in to Blackboard at bb.grcc.edu and access the Orientation course located in your "My Course List." The online orientation course should be completed before attending your in person session. If you do not have a computer or internet access, you will have an option to complete this on campus.
The session contains four sections with four corresponding assessments. If you have questions, please contact the Admissions and Enrollment Center at (616) 234-3300.
5. Enroll in classes
If you are attending an in person orientation, counselors will be available to help students enroll into classes. Please note that you will not be able to enroll in classes until you've attended orientation.
If you were only required to complete the online orientaiton, your registration hold will be lifted approximately 30 minutes after completing the session and you will be eligible to enroll. You may still choose to attend an inperson session as well, or schedule an appointment with an academic counselor.
Note: You may make an academic counseling appointment (616-234-3900) once you have finished orientation
6. Enrolling Information
Note: CLS 100 is an intro to college learning and is required for most new students.
You are not required to enroll in CLS 100 if you 1) have a high school GPA of 3.0 or higher, 2) test into PY 100 via your Accuplacer scores, or 3) transfer to GRCC more than 12 credit hours from another college or university.
7. Accuplacer Students
Qualifying students who have been placed in developmental education courses (IRW 97, IRW 98, MA 97) can go through our FastTrack program to have one of these classes waived by completing a three week course.
8. Apply for Financial Aid at fafsa.gov.
Please anticipate and allow for additional time, if you wish to speak with our Financial Aid officers on the day of your orientation. This process can typically take between one to two hours; please plan accordingly.
