Math Seminars

The Grand Rapids Community College Mathematics Department is pleased to announce that it will host its next Mathematics Seminar on Wednesday, November 20, 3-4 PM in 102 Cook.

Our speaker is GRCC mathematics instructor Brian Hadley.  For the title and abstract of his talk, please see below.

In mathematics, “cardioid” refers to a heart-shaped curve introduced to many students using equations of varying complexity.  Brian’s talk will offer the opportunity to appreciate the beauty of one of the most famous curves in mathematics, without using complicated equations.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

Refreshments will be served at 2:45 PM.

A multiplication table getting to the “heart” of Mathematics

We will look at a simple use of multiplication to construct the mathematical shape known as the cardioid. While attempting to build a bridge between the discrete and continuous branches of mathematics, we will pause a moment to appreciate the visible beauty and patterns that Mathematics uncovers.
